Cat Clinic highly recommends that you try to train your cat or kitten to use a scratching post from an early age to protect your furniture, wood work, and skin.

Also, it is wise to NEVER play with a kitten using your hands or feet. This encourages them to attack and scratch/bite you. It may be cute when they are little, but not so much when they grow up. Always use toys to distract your kitten from using you as prey.
